Page from "Engineering Secrets Whose Blessings We Enjoy"

For Solo Flute.

Bil Smith Composer

Page inspired by Enrico Castellani

New composition for solo Flute inspired by Piero Manzoni, Fortunato Depero, Aldo Tambellini, Mimmo Rotella and the Arte Povera movement. This tablature was born from a need for separation from the traditional. This notation in no way relates to aesthetic fantasies or a quest for fashionable effects, but concern compositional facts that imply an entirely new kind of musical interpretation.

"Defender Sect" for Marimba

"Defender Sect" for Marimba

Published by LNM Editions

"Defender Sect" eschews the conventional musical notation system and instead embraces a divergent set of combinatorial tablatures. This departure from the norm is akin to a magical realism, where the everyday world is infused with elements of the fantastical. Combinations of symbols and patterns on the tablature become the keys to unlocking the secrets of this enchanting composition. The performer like a character in a Marquez novel, must navigate this new reality, deciphering the intricate code to reveal the hidden narrative of the music.

In Marquez's literary world, characters often grapple with the mystical and the inexplicable. Similarly, "Defender Sect" underscores the need for a wholly lucid and impelling vision. Within the intricate web of combinatorial tablatures lies the challenge of control amidst chaos. The Marimbist is called upon not merely to play the notes but to become custodians of an enigmatic realm. He/She must possess a vision that allows one to remain aloof from potentially enthralling novelties within the composition, to control and not simply be controlled by its mesmerizing intricacies.

This composition takes the performer on a journey that traverses profound continuities and significant ruptures. The oscillating tablatures create an ever-shifting landscape, where musical themes evolve and intertwine, only to be suddenly disrupted by unexpected twists. The composition challenges our perception of time and continuity, akin to a portrayal of the past, present, and future coexisting in a magical realist tale.

Within the realm of the score, visual metaphors abound resembling ancient glyphs or cryptic manuscripts which serve as a visual representation of my capacity for detachment and projection. The Marimbist is tasked not only with playing the notes but with interpreting these visual symbols, weaving them into the sonic tapestry.

This score employs an unorthodox notational system based on Circos data visualization software. This intriguing integration of music and technology provides insight into emerging compositional approaches as I have been working on modifications of the Circos program to create a systematic, fluid tablature system to facilitate compositional structure.

The notion to explore this powerful visualization tool came about from a separate study I was conducting on the implications of 'Big Data' on outcomes relating to visualization and experimental musical tablatures.

Circos was originally designed by data scientists to illustrate connections and relationships within complex genomic data sets using circular graphical layouts. The software efficiently handles immense data density to reveal insightful patterns.
Musical elements like rhythm, pitch, and harmony can be mapped onto Circos' rings, ribbons, and heat maps in endlessly configurable ways. This flexibility allows the creation of inventive scores woven from intricate patterns conveying rich details. Phrases and motifs informed by datasets - whether banal or profound - integrate music with outside contexts spanning from mathematics to ecology.

“Optimum Auto-Disaster” has appropriated Circos’ circular data representations as a graphic notation for the trumpet score. Position on the circular staff corresponds to various musical parameters. The resulting visualizations depict intricately layered details contextualizing the work’s title within several data domains.

While likely overwhelming for some at first glance, the immersive graphics reveal how technology can expand musical creativity and expression. The linear constraints of traditional pages vanish through these radial visualizations, providing access to endlessly interwoven motifs.

Circos offers conduits for music infused with layered contexts. As tools democratize data visualization, expect more experimental scores expressing informational multitudes.
"Devise The Optimum Auto-Disaster" isn't just about spectacle. It's a philosophical inquiry, a sonic interrogation no longer constrained by data size or complexity.
For the performer, this score is not merely a challenge; it's a metamorphosis. They become a conduit, an instrument sculpted by algorithms.

"Visumetricity" for Boxwood Clarinet in A

"Visumetricity"

for Boxwood Clarinet in A

"Visumetricity for Boxwood Clarinet in A," a composition in which traditional notational conventions converge with a maximalist topographic syntacticon, inviting a nuanced exploration of structure and form.

At its essence, "Visumetricity" embodies the fusion of traditional notational elements with a maximalist topographic syntacticon, a term that encapsulates the intricate network of symbols and gestures woven into the fabric of the score.

Central to the notational structure of "Visumetricity" is the notion of continuity within categorical segmentation. Here, notational motifs unfold in a continuous stream, yet are discreetly categorized and delineated within the score. This duality of continuity and segmentation imbues the score with a sense of fluidity and coherence, while simultaneously challenging performers to navigate the score, facilitating both code breaking and performative inference.
