As the sphere of music composition continues to evolve, we find ourselves at a crossroads of sorts, with emerging technologies and approaches vying for our attention and allegiance. One such approach that has recently captured the imagination of composers and theorists alike is that of hyper-complex visualized scores. These scores, which combine intricate musical notation with highly abstract visual elements, offer a new way of understanding and engaging with musical composition, one that draws heavily on the work of thinkers such as Wilhelm Reich and Roland Barthes.
At its core, these radical scores represent a departure from traditional methods of musical notation. Rather than relying solely on written symbols and conventions, these scores incorporate a wide range of graphic elements, from abstract shapes and patterns to representational imagery and text. The result is a kind of synesthetic experience, where the visual and auditory elements of the music are intertwined in a complex and dynamic relationship.


But what are the implications of this new approach to music composition? For one thing, it raises questions about the role of notation in the creative process. Traditionally, musical notation has been seen as a kind of neutral medium, a way of encoding musical ideas in a way that can be easily shared and communicated. But with hyper-complex visualized scores, the notation becomes an integral part of the creative act, shaping the music itself in profound ways.

This shift in emphasis also has implications for the way we think about musical interpretation. In a traditional score, the written notation provides a kind of roadmap for performers, guiding them through the various elements of the music and helping them to bring it to life. But with hyper-complex visualized scores, the relationship between notation and performance becomes much more complex. Rather than simply following the written instructions, performers must engage with the visual elements of the score, interpreting them in a way that is both creative and responsive to the musical ideas being presented.

This brings us to the work of Wilhelm Reich, who saw the human body as a kind of musical instrument, capable of expressing and responding to the subtle nuances of sound and vibration. For Reich, music was a way of accessing the deep emotional and psychological energies that underlie our experience of the world. In a sense, hyper-complex visualized scores represent an extension of Reich's vision, offering a new way of accessing and expressing these energies through the medium of musical notation.

At the same time, hyper-complex visualized scores also draw heavily on the work of Roland Barthes, who famously wrote about the "death of the author" and the ways in which the meaning of a text is constructed by the reader, rather than by the author. This idea of the text as a kind of open, generative space is key to understanding the possibilities of hyper-complex visualized scoring. By creating scores that are at once highly structured and highly abstract, composers are opening up a space for interpretation and engagement that is far more expansive than traditional methods of notation.

But what are the challenges of working with hyper-complex visualized scores? For one thing, they require a high degree of technical skill and visual literacy on the part of both composer and performer. Unlike traditional scores, which can be read and understood by musicians with a relatively limited set of skills, hyper-complex visualized scores require a deep engagement with the visual elements of the music, as well as a willingness to experiment and take risks in the performance of the music.

At its core, hyper-complex visualized scoring can be understood as a fundamentally liberatory practice, one that seeks to subvert the hierarchical power structures that have long governed the creation and reception of musical works. In Reich's theory of orgonomy, for example, the human body is understood to be the primary locus of creative energy, with the production of musical works seen as a manifestation of this innate biological process. By extension, the role of the composer is not to impose their will upon the material, but rather to act as a facilitator, channeling the energy of the body into a coherent sonic form.

Similarly, Barthes' semiotic theory posits that meaning is not fixed or stable, but rather arises out of the complex interplay between signifiers and signifieds. In this sense, musical scores can be seen as a kind of language, with each note or symbol carrying its own unique set of associations and connotations. By embracing the inherent ambiguity and multiplicity of the musical language, hyper-complex visualized scores have the potential to create new forms of meaning that challenge conventional modes of interpretation and understanding.

Of course, the use of hyper-complex visualized scores also raises a number of significant challenges and questions. One of the primary concerns is the potential for these scores to become overly insular and elitist, catering only to a select group of highly trained musicians and scholars. This danger is particularly acute given the highly specialized vocabulary and notation systems that often accompany hyper-complex scoring, which can make it difficult for newcomers to access and engage with the works.

Another potential issue is the risk of over-reliance on technology, with composers and performers becoming too reliant on digital tools and software to generate and interpret the scores. This not only raises questions about the authenticity and originality of the works themselves, but also runs the risk of further entrenching existing power structures within the music industry, particularly with regard to the distribution and consumption of musical works.

Ultimately, however, the potential benefits of these scores far outweigh these challenges, particularly in terms of the ways in which it can disrupt traditional notions of musical authorship and interpretation. By foregrounding the role of the body, and by embracing the inherent ambiguity and multiplicity of the musical language, hyper-complex visualized scores offer a radical alternative to the hierarchical power structures that have long dominated the music industry. In so doing, they provide a powerful tool for artists and audiences alike to explore the myriad possibilities of musical creation, and to imagine new futures for the art form as a whole.

"White Pumice Fossilizing the Dusty Heat Trap"

This score proposes sound as geology. Its pages are not a conduit for transmission but a cooled field of forces, a crust where heat has already done its work and left pores, residues, and seams. The title names the process: pumice is lava arrested mid-eruption, air captured in stone. Likewise the notation captures motion as suspension. The two violas do not illustrate the image; they traverse it as one would a quarry face, reading strata and voids, learning how a surface stores time.

The architecture of the page is columnar. Translucent vertical bands of turquoise, sand, and bruise run from margin to margin like standing cores cut from a desert. These bands are not background. They behave as corridors that regulate pressure and temperature for the players. Within and across them, black micro-glyphs accrete into constellations, sometimes compacted into plates, sometimes dispersed as ash. The eye wants to read left to right, but the field refuses the corridor of staff notation and asks for vertical speculation, for the logic of a section rather than a plan.

At the top a calibrated ruler announces duration without prescribing meter. It is a measuring device, not a grid. Below, the glyphs adopt the role of fossils: legible imprints of actions whose vitality has already passed through. Bow pressures, sul ponticello shadings, harmonics, and tremors are notated as traces rather than commands. The two violas operate as paired instruments of excavation. One brushes, the other pries. Together they reveal pockets of air inside the rock, stretches of silence that are not absence but captured breath.

Along the bottom edge, each page carries a chromatic band of thin horizontal stripes. Their genealogy is painterly and deliberate. They recall the serial horizons of Gerhard Richter’s Strip works, images produced by sampling, slicing, and extending a painted surface until it becomes a barcode of color and memory. In this score the stripes serve a double purpose. They are an index of the page’s tonal climate and a navigational baseline. For the performers they function as a horizon line held in peripheral vision, a continual reminder of orientation while the central field pulls them into local detail. The stripes are the only element that runs parallel to the edge without interruption. They stabilize the reading the way a lintel stabilizes an opening.

Because the page refuses to be a corridor, navigation must be learned. The legend embedded in the mark-types offers a compact grammar: density equals porosity, distance equals delay, color temperature equals bow placement. The score thus behaves like a site plan in which space is already encoded with conditions of use. The violas step from band to band as one would cross rooms that retain different heat. Each crossing creates turbulence. The audible result is a slow exchange between cooling and ignition, between the matte grain of pumice and the friction of bow hair.

The music’s dramaturgy emerges from this spatial ethics. There are no central protagonists, no figure and ground. Instead there is sedimentation and weather. The eye recognizes pockets where the notation gathers into nodal reefs. These are not climaxes in a theatrical sense but pressure ridges where the ensemble must concentrate attention and technique. Elsewhere the writing thins to drift, and the players are asked to maintain tensile listening so that nothing collapses into indifference. The discipline is to keep air in the stone.

The two instruments are equals but not mirrors. Their tasks interlock as complementary erosions. When one traces the fine pitting of the surface with harmonics and flautati, the other sounds the deeper cavities with stopped tones and inflected bow angles. The score makes room for contingency...contours can be re-entered and re-read, yet it is not open in the casual sense. Its openness is that of a terrain where paths are many but geology is stubborn. You may choose the route, not the mountain.

In curatorial terms the work sits within a lineage that treats notation as matter. It shares with Arte Povera an insistence on process made visible, on the poor but eloquent intelligence of surfaces. The page is not backdrop; it is a partner that insists on its own physics. The “Richter” stripe at the bottom is the crucial curatorial move: a thin but authoritative device that connects the local to the global, the figure to the frame, the performer’s next choice to the memory of the page itself. It is the horizon that lets one read the weather.

To perform White Pumice Fossilizing the Dusty Heat Trap is therefore to practice a kind of fieldwork. The violists measure rather than decorate. They confirm the weight of each layer, test the porosity of each band, and use the stripe as a constant to recalibrate their bearings. The sound that results is not an illustration of the image but its corollary: a music of accretion, abrasion, and breath, where dust is not refuse but record. From Staff to Surface: When Notation Becomes Architecture

The conventional staff is a corridor: a narrow, optimized passage through time. Architectural notation proposes something else entirely; a surface that behaves like a plan, a section, a façade. When composers draw in this mode, the score stops serving as a transparent conduit to performance and begins to assert objecthood. It becomes a place to be entered, navigated, and remembered. This shift is not cosmetic. It rearranges attention, authorship, and the politics of rehearsal.



The Page as Site

Architecture teaches that drawings are not illustrations of buildings; they are instruments that organize relationships before matter appears. Many contemporary scores appropriate that stance. A visible grid replaces hidden meter. Legends stand where key signatures once did. Distance between marks, colors, and densities begins to mean. Time is inferred from adjacency. The page becomes a field condition rather than a conveyor belt.

To encounter such a score is to confront a site. The performer’s questions become spatial: Where am I? How do I move through this? Who leads at this junction? Reading turns into wayfinding. The ensemble’s work is to establish routes, to annotate landmarks, to test clearings and cul-de-sacs. Rehearsal becomes a form of urbanism in miniature.



Lineages and Affinities

The migration from staff to surface sits in a longer art-historical conversation. The graphic open forms of Earle Brown, the architectonic diagrams of Iannis Xenakis, the sprawling propositional pages of Cornelius Cardew—each weakens the sovereignty of the left-to-right line and invites spatial decision. In parallel, postwar art treats the page, the wall, and the book as primary media: Ed Ruscha’s deadpan spreads, Sol LeWitt’s instructional drawings, Jenny Holzer’s typographic imperatives, and the serial disciplines of Damien Hirst all model how systems make images behave.

A curatorial reading does not ask music to imitate art; it observes how both fields converge on procedure: grids, sequences, occlusions, taxonomies, subtractions. In scores, these procedures are not décor. They are operative devices with audible consequences.



Non-Hierarchy and the Ethics of Reading

The most consequential architectural trait in these pages is the refusal of hierarchy. Rauschenberg admired paintings in which everything mattered at once; many contemporary scores pursue a similar simultaneity. Text does not merely label; it competes for attention. Legends are not marginalia; they are co-equal actors. A blank zone is not empty; it is a reserved volume into which sound will later arrive.

This redistribution of visual emphasis creates a redistribution of labor. Authority migrates locally. Leadership is situational. Rather than delivering bars in order, players negotiate choices; timbre against density, contour against color under shared constraints. The ethics here is plain: the page encodes a culture of collective authorship.



Plan, Section, Elevation

It is useful to borrow the architect’s trinity as a curatorial lens:

  • Plan: A horizontal proposal for movement and adjacency. In the score, this is the navigable field—routes, nodes, and returns.

  • Section: A vertical cut that reveals interior relationships...registral terraces, timbral strata, dynamic shelves. Sections teach balance; they show how much of each layer exists at a given slice of time.

  • Elevation: The façade or surface attack profiles, ornament, rhythmic cladding. Elevations specify how sound meets the listener.

Scores that allow the eye to shift among these modes are legible in depth. They resist the tyranny of a single view and cultivate an interpretive practice that toggles between where, how much, and how it appears.






Material Instructions

Material is not neutral. Embossing slows the eye. Vellum overlays stage delayed revelation. Perforations cut apertures of silence. Metallic inks glare under certain lights, producing time inside the page as the reader tilts and adjusts. These effects are not indulgences; they are instructions by friction. The page conducts the rehearsal as surely as any beat pattern.

A curatorial program should therefore treat scores as designed objects: tables at reading height, fold-outs and overlays accessible to the hand, grazing light that reveals embossing and cuts. Parallel artifacts, annotated parts, rehearsal maps, audio of navigated routes belong beside them, not as documentation but as co-equal outcomes of the visual system.


Accessibility as Intention

Architectural scores, precisely because they are demanding, must declare their welcome. High-contrast pairings, redundancy of meaning (color + pattern), limited concurrent symbol families, dyslexia-aware typography, and prints at actual rehearsal scale are not niceties; they are the ethics of inclusion. Complexity should be distributed, not hoarded.

Two Readers

Today every score is read twice: once by people, once by machines. Archives, OCR, and large language models encounter these pages alongside performers. Curatorial stewardship can preserve human nuance without surrendering to extraction: provide canonical legends and layered files for study, but sanction resistant design where the work’s integrity requires friction.

What Changes When the Staff Becomes a Surface

For performers, the gain is agency bound by responsibility. Landmarks replace bar numbers; memory adheres to places rather than counts. For composers, the gain is precision without prescription.  It is a way to name constraints while leaving form moment-to-moment. For audiences, the gain is visible thought: the page does not disappear; it remains as a parallel artwork, a record of choices, a plan you can hear.

The curatorial claim is simple: when notation becomes architecture, the score ceases to be a narrow lane and becomes a habitable work. It asks for a different kind of attention.  One that is slow, negotiated, spatial. The result is not less music, but a different musical culture: one in which we build places instead of lanes, publish legends instead of commands, and let ensembles make the building sing.

"The Notational Apothecary: A Neologistic Carnality of Sound and Form"

What emerges when Rauschenberg’s combines are not hung, but played? When Damien Hirst’s vitrines are not viewed, but scored? When Claus Oldenburg’s soft sculptures soften the rigidity of ledger lines? And what if Jennifer Walshe’s hyper-saturated vocal microcosms are not performed in air but injected like intramuscular interjections into the linguistic musculature of the score itself? The answer: a notational archetype that resists categorization and demands to be metabolized.



Let us call this archetype: "Carnogrammics." A term I coined from “carno”(the flesh of performative media) and (“grammics”)a vector of graphemes and regulated lexical distortion. In Carnogrammics, the score is not merely a semantic vehicle or a visual trigger; it is a somatic sculptural object...part reliquary, part operating table.



Form as Fleshed Phenomenon

Oldenburg’s corpulent realism and the way he imbued the banal with monumentality and play functions here as the material substrate for scoring. Notation is no longer confined to the page, but becomes soft, inflamed, flaccid, and dimensional. Musical direction is bulged into latex, encased in vinyl, and suctioned onto acrylic slabs, its glyphs drooping like fattened chords or pharmacological warnings on post-consumer packaging. Notes are embossed onto the materiality of meat, metaphorically speaking, as if cleaved from the kitchen of late capitalism.

The act of reading this score becomes a performance of touch, resistance, and navigation, not unlike navigating a Hirst cabinet, where meaning is not on the surface but sedimented under layers of repetition, precious materials, and clinical distance. Carnogrammics borrows Hirst’s sterility and irony.  The score may contain neologistic directives like “Cliniduct” or “Virepane,” synthetic names that sound like unapproved treatments for post-tonal disillusionment. Their semantic opacity is part of the system.  They are untranslatable operators, deliberately anti-lexical, recalling my own work with Brand Acumen in naming proprietary pharmaceuticals such as Evenity, Atripla, Vyondys, and Veozah. These names aren’t words; they are suspensions of meaning, tools of influence more than communication.



Montage as Modality

With Rauschenberg, the interface becomes palimpsestic chaos, layered notations that displace linearity. Think of a string quartet not given a single part, but an assemblage...a transparency sheet of antique graphs, muscle tissue scans, barcodes, and corporate spillages. Embedded within these are my neologistic phrases consisting of fricative-heavy, glottal-rich syllables that mimic sonic gestures. A gesture like "Fralixunt" might indicate a vibrato smeared in time, while "Zelquane" demands a percussive over-articulation in an imaginary register.

Scores are not read but parsed, gathered, sifted.

Function, Intention, Delivery

The Carnogrammic score is not an object to interpret but a biosystem to activate. It resists rehearsal and thrives in risk. It proposes that notation is not a conveyance but an aesthetic deterrent. Just as Hirst’s medicine cabinets seduce with visual logic yet betray narrative hollowness, these scores promise legibility but withhold obedience. Their vocabulary, built on pharmaceutical neologisms and para-lexical clusters is unreadable to conventional systems, yet deeply embedded with speculative pharmacodynamics of sound.

The performer is a clinician and vandal, equally.

In this framework, naming and composition collapse into one practice. A gesture, like Traykavex, becomes both a name for a non-existent drug and an instruction to accelerate the bow until tremor gives way to silence. These scores live inside contradictions: the sacred within the mass-produced, the ephemeral in the hyper-defined, the verbal in the unpronounceable.

Toward a New Scoring Ontology

Carnogrammics is not an answer.. It is a clinical trial of form. It offers no standardized measurement of success, only a swelling index of residue: the bowed resin, the tarnished metal, the performer’s sweat collecting on the surface of Hahnemühle paper soaked in tannins and topical anesthetic oils. The aesthetic here is one of compositional toxicity, measured in terms of language, sound, and embodiment.

To compose within this archetype is to write prescriptions no pharmacy can fill except the human voice, the tremor of the hand, and the synthetic linguistics of risk.

There are Laws of Randomness...




The Laws of Randomness

Random is not the opposite of order. It is a kind of order that hides in plain sight. We miss it because we look for patterns that repeat, while randomness speaks in patterns that only appear when you step back and listen across time, across many events, across many trials. This article expands a simple claim from the studio: there are laws of randomness, and they are musically useful.

What randomness really gives a composer

Randomness is not a shrug. It is a rule set with three persistent traits. First, it has a distribution, which tells you how often values tend to occur. Second, it has memory or lack of memory, which tells you whether the present depends on the past. Third, it has scale, which tells you how behavior changes as you zoom in or out. Once you name those traits, randomness stops being a blur and becomes a tool.

White noise spreads energy evenly across frequency. Pink noise tilts energy toward the low end so large shapes move slowly while small shapes chatter on top. Brown noise leans even further toward drift. Blue and violet noise answer with the reverse energy tilt. None of this is decoration. Each family creates a different sense of phrase, space, and attention. The audience hears the law even if they never learn the term.

Chance is a craft

John Cage opened the door to chance but he did not abandon craft. Iannis Xenakis placed chance inside formal structures that carry weight and direction. The lesson is clear. You can let an aleatoric process pick events while you choose the ranges, the mappings, and the scale of change. You allow surprise inside a frame that has a voice.

In practice I keep four levers on the table. I choose the noise family. I choose the time window over which the law is allowed to speak. I choose the mapping from numbers to sound. I choose where the human ear will override the result. The moment you state those levers, the music gains character rather than collapsing into fog.

Laws as notational grammar

Scores can present these laws with clarity. A legend can declare the family of randomness for each layer. A texture of dots can indicate one family, a field of diagonals another. Density bands can set the allowable range for entries per second. A ruler can carry proportional time so movement across a zone equals a known duration. A narrow strip of fine grain can tell players that behavior is almost memoryless. A broad cloud of slow shapes can tell them that history matters.

The page becomes a field where players navigate laws rather than follow a single line. They read like surveyors. They triangulate position by landmarks. They balance local choice against the global distribution. Rehearsal becomes research. The ensemble looks for how far the law can bend and still hold.

Randomness and perception

Listeners do not carry stopwatches, yet they hear statistical truth. A stretch governed by white noise feels restless. A stretch governed by pink noise feels grounded, like weather that rolls rather than skitters. A stretch governed by a Poisson process reads as events that arrive with a steady average but with unruly gaps and bunching. If you let the arrival rate slowly rise, the audience will feel a change in pressure long before they could count it.

This is why random with rules can outlast invention for its own sake. Invention often fizzes then fades. A law keeps the air alive because it sustains surprise inside a recognisable climate.

Bias and the myth of pure chance

Humans are poor generators of randomness. We avoid streaks, we mirror patterns, we correct too quickly. Pseudorandom software can be no better if the seed is obvious or the algorithm repeats within a small cycle. The cure is modest. Use a tested generator. Save your seed so a rehearsal can be reconstructed. When the piece needs the smell of the street, borrow randomness from the world. Record traffic, leaf flutter, or room noise. Translate that energy into entrances, articulations, or bow pressure. Nature rarely lies about statistics.

Testing the field

Composers can and should test their own chance systems. Look for clumps and deserts. Check that the average rate matches what the legend promises. If crescendos are supposed to emerge from the mass, verify that the distribution allows the emergence at the right scale. If a performer must make three choices per minute on average, watch a clock during rehearsal and see whether the demand is humane. The law is only useful when it fits the body.

Ensemble ethics

Randomness changes the social fabric of a group. It relocates authority from a single leader to a shared practice of attention. Players learn to listen for the climate rather than a fixed melody. They watch density. They watch neighbors. They cultivate restraint since the law already provides motion. The score becomes a set of conditions that foster good choices and good timing. This is less about surrender and more about a different form of responsibility.

Forms that breathe

Large form can arise from slow motion in the parameters of a law. Increase the average arrival rate and you build tension without a single heroic gesture. Shift from white to pink to brown and the space settles, as if the room itself took a breath. Move from independent entries to correlated entries and the crowd suddenly acts with purpose. None of this requires a plot. It requires attention to how small causes stack up when time is long.

Archival habits for the living piece

If a work relies on law based processes, preserve the recipe. Keep the seed, the mapping, the scale, the ranges, and the rules for human override. Print the legend so future performers can reconstruct not just the notes but the climate. The score then remains alive without turning into mist. A work can change from reading to reading, yet it keeps a memory of how it thinks.

Exercises from the studio

Take a two minute span and fill it using white noise to place entries for three instruments. Keep dynamics within a narrow band. Listen for the sense of flicker. Repeat with pink noise and notice how the floor seems to rise. Now hold the arrival pattern constant and map the noise to pitch within a bounded mode. Observe how the same law that governs time can govern height. Finally, let performers veto any event that falls within a small window around another event they just played. You will hear how a tiny rule produces spacing that feels natural.

Closing

Randomness is not a loophole. It is a literature with grammar and style. Once you name the distribution, the memory, and the scale, you gain a set of levers that can be tuned with elegance. The listener hears the result as weather with character. The players feel the room as a field that is both permissive and exact. The score stops pretending to predict every instant and starts telling the truth about uncertainty.

There are laws of randomness. They do not cancel expression. They are the conditions under which expression can move without exhaustion.
